About Georgia State University
Georgia State University, commonly referred to as simply GSU, is an urban research university in downtown Atlanta, which is the capital and the most populated city in the US state of Florida, as well as the 3rd largest city in USA, having a population estimated at a number of more than 537 000 inhabitants.
GSU was founded in 1913, under the name of Georgia School of Technology’s `Evening School of Commerce`, focused on what was then called `the new science of business`, being officially named in 1969 as Georgia State University, in 1995 being granted with the `research university` status, joining the Medical College of Georgia, the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Georgia.
Since it first opened its doors, GSU grew, serving today more than 30 000 students, consisting of 6 different colleges, through which it grants various degrees in numerous fields of study, which are: the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, Georgia State University College of Law, J. Mack Robinson College of Business, College of Health & Human Sciences, College of Arts & Sciences and College of Education.
The athletic teams from GSU are known as the Georgia State Panthers, who compete in the NCAA Division I in 17 sports, being best known for their achievements in basketball, as well as in golf, in which they won, in both in both men’s and women’s, their first 2 conference championships, as members of the NCAA, in 2006.
The list of notable GSU alumni contains resonant names such as Max Burns - former Congressman, Georgia 12th District, Lanard Copeland - former NBA player, later famous for playing in the National Basketball League (Australia), Lance Krall – actor, Paul Coverdell - late US Senator from Georgia, as well as many other people who have made themselves notable in various fields, after graduation.
